March 2016 – Students Attend Science Discovery Day At University Of District Of Columbia

On March 11, 2016, the Daniel A Payne CDC’s Percy Julian Institute sponsored a field trip for four (4) middle schools at the University of District of Columbia. Nearly 80 students participated in a Science Discovery Day. The objectives of the event were to increase awareness of STEM disciplines for minority students and encourage them to pursue careers in STEM fields.

Laboratories in several STEM disciplines were available for visits by students. The visits included tours and demonstrations, many of the “hands-on” type. The STEM disciplines included biology, chemistry, entomology, anatomy, physiology, civil and electrical engineering, mathematics, and mortuary science. This approach provided students with a broad STEM experience. Groups of 8-10 students visited a subset of the laboratories. The visits were preceded by some exercises with all the students in an auditorium setting.
